baw 4,360
Imagine your starting again in hunting, you haven't been into lurchers etc. you want to get into hunting, would you pick lurchers again with the way things are now? I know we all know the thrill lurchers bring and it's in your blood but young guys starting out nowadays ain't like when we started with the law and dogs getting stole etc etc. I've total respect for guys like KC who got into this game after the ban, much easier activities out there. 3 Quote Link to post

Seriously though, it was a thread header thinking of getting a lurcher got me thinking. If it wasn't in your blood, nagging away at you like a drug to do it, would I start out by getting a lurcher? Don't know if I would mate. Hard to get permission, police giving you hassle, folk walk there dogs as if yours is about to eat there's lol. Lot of hassles involved in lurchers for a beginner, lot more than in the good ole days 1 Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,327
Id admit these days im hardly a part timer lol..im like BL I still like to be out schooling, training, feeding etc but the risks are mighty if your hopping the fence for some of us who've already felt the wrath of the judicial system since the hunting legislation came in..ive heard it all before....saying they won't ever stop and im a bit the same even the judge said to me I was very passionate about my hunti g lol but alas I think it just further added fuel to the fire haha..BUT it makes you sit down and look at the bigger picture..ie freedom, kids, house, motor etc..is it really worth it? Im happy to let others do the lions share of running the gauntlet these days..im happy doing what I do and ive got memories aplenty from days when we were allowed to run a hare or fox or even a deer with a lurcher..some won't be as lucky as I and the rest of the middle aged and older brigade...ahh when I was a lad lol 5 Quote Link to post

bird 9,947
good post mate, and had good think about this one, and to honest and I hate to say this , prob better of with a gun. Ive had 12g for 30odd years same as lurchers and in all that time its always been a up hill battle trying to work my dogs legal.where I am now been here 24 years and they never wanted me on there ground farmers keepers, ive done all beating, even help few times with sheep shearing getting them penned ready , and all to know avail still a no no regards working my lurchers . and with this feckin hunting with dogs ban, it played into the land owners hands and I bet few lads would say the same as me . in fact I was arguing with my brother in law last year about this, as he used do lot of pigeon shooting in other areas, and had lot of ground, so asked ages ago if might put a word in for me , he said you got no chance mate, they want have dogs on there ground, infact they shoot the hares to stop lurcher lads going on . so would say either get ferrets or a gun, if you get lurcher you will make things a lot harder for your self Quote Link to post
paulus 26
i must be different as i have always had places to run dogs but my problem is my feet, me mother should have picked someone with an Arabic tint and maybe i would have ended up with better feet, if im honest i wouldn't have changed anything but if i had to start now then i think the answer would have to be a no, a spaniel and or lab would be my choice to work with the gun although my lurchers are more than capable and indeed do fill this role when i am in the mood for a wander with the shooter, Quote Link to post
